Religion and Spirituality

The issue of religion and spirituality is being recognised as increasingly important in human services as part of our commitment to respect, value and accept the whole person. In the past these aspects have often been ignored, partly through workers feeling uncomfortable about how to deal with these issues, and partly through the recognition that religion in particular has often contributed to human misery and oppression. In this book I have tried to keep a balance between acknowledging the dark side of these topics, but also helping people see the ways in which people’s resilience and health can be enhanced by their religious and spiritual world views.

Values

In this book I have taken as a framework the 10 Essential Capabilities familiar to workers in the mental health field, and have explored the value base for all human services through this approach. I hope that this provides a fresh look at a subject which rightly remains at the heart of all good practice in the helping professions.

Communication Skills for Health and Social Care

This book complements many of the standard text books on communication skills by adopting a dictionary approach to its key themes. It seeks to provide an introduction to each topic; some relevant exercises for readers to use either for individual learning or in the context of professional supervision; and suggestions for further reading. Its distinctive style tackles some topics not mentioned in other texts’ such as ‘breaking bad news’; how to chair meetings’; ‘whistle-blowing’ and guidelines for giving talks and presentations. It has been written with a wide cross section of helping professions in mind so that anyone who works with people in any way will find it useful.
